We’re going to your personal library for today’s creative writing prompt.
Choose a book title at random and take that as your starting point for a new piece of work. You don’t have to base your writing on whatever the original book was about, just use the title as a stepping off point.
To save you the bother of looking at your own books, here are some titles from my collection:
- Good Behaviour
- The Lonely Sea and Sky
- A Sense of Reality
- Burial Rites
- Memento Mori
- Breathing Lessons
- Wild Fire
- Second Fiddle
Choose one (or several and mash them together) and see where you go. However, be warned that if your piece ends up as a novel, you might have to find a shiny new title for it.
If you are struggling to find something to write, try taking one of the titles to launch a ten-minute free-writing session. Just write (on paper or computer screen, your choice) whatever comes to mind. It can be complete drivel because no-one is going to read this (yet), this is just to get the creative juices flowing. You may like to use a Thesaurus to help you find some extra words.
And don’t forget, all the words you’ll ever need are located in the dictionary – its just up to you to find the right ones and put them in order. Good luck!
Back to Basics – if you need to catch up, it’s all here
I intend posting prompts here each day (until May Day) at 5pm – alive at five (Dublin time).
