Your creative writing prompt today is to write
an Acceptance Speech*
Congratulations, you’ve won a big award!
There’s going to be a presentation ceremony (it will be black tie/ballgown, cameras flashing, canapes served by minions, the works). You know in advance that you are the overall winner so there’s no excuse for getting to your feet and just mumbling a gushing ‘thank you!’ and nothing more. You must write a speech.
This is fantasy, right? So your acceptance speech could be for the Nobel Prize or an Oscar (the results were leaked!), or it could be as best neighbour/carer/community activist in your town.
Or perhaps you’ve won a major literary award?
You can choose what prize to accept. Then use your speech to remind everyone of your modest but significant achievements by using words of grace and eloquence.
You can be as mad as you like here, have some fun, since this is (for now) make-believe.
And the winner is…!
Can you hear that applause?
*If you’re keen to sharpen your all-round writing skills, push yourself to complete writing exercises (like this one) that take you out of your comfort zone. It is all writing – copywriting for adverts, press releases, political speeches, plays for stage, radio or film. You might not have thought of any of these as your thing but try giving them a go, just for the craic.
Back to Basics – if you need to catch up, it started here (but we’re over half way through now).
I intend posting prompts here each day (until May Day) at 5pm – alive at five (Dublin time).
