Creative Writing Classes, May 2024

During May 2024, I will be running some new creative writing classes in Roscommon Arts Centre, for four Tuesdays, from 10.30am to 12.30pm as part of the Bealtaine Festival. These will be informal sessions looking at why we write, how we chose a genre, how we find a voice, writing for an audience and where to look for publication. I’ll also be looking at finding ideas and inspiration, how to keep going and where to get more information. And because it’s me, I’ll be banging on about point of view, scene setting and using past, present and future tenses. There will be a few writing exercises and examples of short fiction (including flash), creative non-fiction, poetry, memoir and journal keeping, plus some reading suggestions.  The Roscommon Arts Centre blurb is below, and you can book via their Box Office – or the link here.

After the successful Lunchtime Leaves series, Louise G Cole returns to Roscommon Arts Centre with a special writing workshop series as part of our Bealtaine celebrations.

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a writer, this course is designed to kick-start the creativity of anyone who may not have written anything more than a shopping list or a greetings card since their schooldays.
Using creative writing prompts, exercises and triggers, there will be discussion and writing time, with participants encouraged to try poetry, memoir, short stories, flash fiction, journal keeping and creative non-fiction.
This interactive course is also suitable for more experienced writers who may be looking for an opportunity for further encouragement and inspiration in their creative practice.
The series will consist of 4 workshops, every Tuesday in May from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
Participants should bring a pen and notebook, and will receive suggestions for further reading, plus information about publication opportunities and literary competition submissions.

She is the editor of Autumn Leaves, the annual literary broadsheet published by Roscommon Arts Office, and she curated the subsequent series of poetry readings ‘Lunchtime Leaves’ at Roscommon Arts Centre. Louise was recently one of three poets commissioned to write new work for the Roscommon Laneways Project. She posts weekly creative writing prompts and exercises at www.louisegcolewriter.com, where you can find out more about her writing life – and why she insists on the ‘G’ in her name.
