My trusty word box rarely fails me when I’m in need of some quick inspiration.
And that’s what today is all about. So our creative writing prompt/exercise is to delve into the box and see what emerges.
I’ve kept this collection of random words cut from magazines and journals for ages – and it can be handy in my writing group when we’re looking for something to trigger new writing. I have another box with phrases and multiple words, but I’ve settled on the box of single words for today.
Obviously, I had to pick out the words this week on your behalf. And no, I’ve no idea (yet) what to make of them.
I often take the choice of words (there are eight here) and try to get them into a sentence or two that makes some kind of sense as quickly as possible, using the least number of additional words. And that sometimes leads on to me thinking of a storyline or a theme for a poem, and off I go.
This week, the words are:
crackers
pearl
power
delivery
raven
front
sleep
changes
You could try using each word as the first in a sentence and see where that takes you. Or it could be a poem, again with each word at the start of a new line.
Or you could take one or two of the words and trawl through memories before writing a piece of memoir.
As ever, this is just a prompt to get you to do some new writing, just for the fun of it.
Call back next week at 5pm (Dublin time) on Wednesday for another new prompt/exercise.
